“The real hero here is Amanda. She’s the one that got this rolling. We’re following her lead,” said Cleveland Police Deputy Chief Ed Tumba at a press conference this morning. “Without her we wouldn’t be here today.”– ABC News

Let’s take a moment here and re-read this quote from the Cleveland police brass.

I have no issue with the man hailing Amanda Berry, who along with two other victims, were living with their alleged captors in a home, hidden away for nearly a decade and subject to unspeakable horrors.  Yes, Berry took an important step in running to the door and frantically drawing attention to her plight once said kidnappers were out of range.  This action did also help her fellow captives Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michele Knight, 32 who reportedly went missing in two separate cases.

But the person who helped Berry get from banging on a door to standing outside of it is definitely deserving of recognition.  A neighbor, Charles Ramsey, heard the commotion and came to her rescue with another man, helping to beat down that door and release her.

As many of my Facebook and Twitter friends point out, that there is a truly character revealing move. After all, as  Ramsey says, he was at least acquaintances with the men in that house and for all he knew, was getting sucked into a messy domestic dispute.  So many people would have stopped right there.

We all know how that can end and there are three, I repeat, three Castro brothers.

But no matter, Ramsey — whom some are mocking for his mullet and Sweet Brown-esque soundbites– answered the call, and for that, he should receive more than just viral views or the predictable Auto-tune treatment.

Some reports say police had come to the home where these three missing women were being held against their will at least three times and left without even knowing what horrors went on inside.

So though I respect the long arm of the law, they’re not necessarily the heroes either in this case.

That said, why does the police deputy chief feel the need to clarify who is the savior?  All due respect, it certainly wasn’t him.

So, let’s tip our hats to a man who is not only providing us with entertainment, but inspiration.  Charles Ramsey stepped up where others would not.  He involved himself when many would walk away.  Sadly, he himself hints that he knew something was desperately wrong when a “pretty white woman” rushed into “a Black man’s arms.”

But it would be even more desperately wrong if we don’t all open our arms to this upstanding citizen for the role he played in cracking this case.  As I said on Twitter earlier today, he’s not a meme, he’s a real man…and quite clearly, a hero deserving of respect.

How ’bout those Bulls?

1. R-Kitech featuring Precise, “The Feeling”
If you miss that smoothed out soulful hip-hop, you’ll be dancing under your desk to this R-Kitech track featuring Precise. The Chi-town MC, Precise, has had my ear for a while and I was glad to lend it again to hear this audio gem. No truer words have been spoken when R-Kitech spits that today’s MCs are victims of technology. (That means you, Trinidad James.)

2. Rediculus, “Let’s Go”
This super producer, also from the Windy City, does not have to ask me twice with “Let’s Go.” This upbeat across-the-pond collabo with U.K.-based rhymer FDot1 takes you on a rambling ride down a path paved with clever lyricism and expertly added horns.  I recommend listening to this before facing up to your most irritating co-worker.  You might even smile at her/him.

3. Tasha’s World featuring SB, “Running”
This offering could just be the next certified foreign exchange. Take a listen to Netherlands-based singer Tasha’s World who has wisely teamed up with uber talented Chi-town based MC, Sean “SB” butler. This track is charting high over in the ‘lands and deservedly so, as you’ll hear when you click play.

4.  Janelle Monae featuring Erykah Badu, “Q.U.E.E.N.”

Erykah Badu is one of my favorite artists of all-time and Janelle Monae is definitely dancing and singing her way up to a similar distinction.  To see these two elegant, self-assured talents work together on “Q.U.E.E.N” does my heart proud, especially in light of the onslaught of half-dressed, writhing R&B “stars” who currently rule the charts.  This funktastic romp deserves the royal treatment.  Here’s a real reason to Bow Down.

5. Clams Casino, “Bookfiend” (featuring Doom)
Last, but never least, is some hawt ish from Bookfiend featuring Doom that can hopefully carry you all the way to the end of the week.  Warning: The dreamy instrumentals of Clams Casino paired with Doom’s existential utterances might get you daydreaming, so do not listen to this while focused on a specific, difficult task, such as balancing your company’s spreadsheets or during a conference call with a client. S/O to my friend Dirty Dave for sending this through my earbuds.

So I chalked it up to her ongoing campaign to be America’s Sweetheart when Reese Witherspoon immediately and effusively apologized a few weeks ago once word got out that she and hubby Jim Toth ran into a lil’ trouble with the long arm of the law.

I gave her credit for owning up to the tomfoolery that ensued from a drunk driving arrest, which included asking the po po if he knew who she was, hopping out of her ride after Mr. Officer told her to remain seated, and then asserting her rights as a citizen of the U.S. Americas like she was Miss Teen USA South Carolina circa 2007.

But I now know this actress, one of my faves actually, had absolutely no choice in the matter.  NOTHING and I mean nothing prepares you for watching the actual footage of Miss Tracy Flick storming her way all up into the middle of an arrest.

TMZ hath snatched her wig tonight!

Here are 5 lessons you can learn from Reese’s mistake.

1.  NEVER run up on the police, even if they’ve got your boo.  Even Tiny, the ultimate ride or die, knows better than this.

2.  Do not outline your American rights on U.S. soil, unless you’re this guy and know (or at least sound like you know) what the fudge you are talking about.

3.  Don’t ever ask anybody if they know who you are.  Who has this actually helped?  Just look what happened to Jaime Lannister when he pulled that type of mess on “Game of Thrones.”

4.  Think hard about what you are actually doing to aforementioned boo, whom you think you’re defending.  He or she might actually get mad at you for making things worse.  Note how Mr. Toth said, at around the 1:28 mark,  that he had nan to do with Reese’s descent into divadom.

5.  Do not channel Dave Chappelle’s “Keeping it Real Gone Wrong” sketch unless you are on set at Comedy Central.

Thanks Gawd that justice has been served, and this awful ad has been pulled.

Everybody, and I do mean eeeerrybody affiliated with the footage below needs to get slapped.

From the Odd Future “stars” to the director, Tyler the Creator himself. Massive slap.  I’m not even leaving out craft services.  All of them deserve a giant figurative backhand from a Pimp Named Slickback.

So many things wrong with this picture that it’s mind rupturing.  Watch it first, if you can will yourself to do so, and then check off the list with me.

Here is what we are dealing with:

(1) A physically battered White woman looking like the subject of the next “Law & Order: SVU.” (Cha-ching)

(2) A seeming gang of Black male offenders standing in a police line-up alongside a goat.

(3) Aforementioned jive-talking goat who makes Jar Jar Bings deserving of an NAACP Image Award and sounds like a suspect from the aforementioned L&O episode.  (Did this furry SOB really threaten I’m a “dew you up” to the victim?  Did he actually factually make reference to snitches getting stitches?)

What in the what is the explanation for this?  What is funny about it?  How could the supposed genius Creator be so blind as to stagger into stereotypes this colossal aided and abetted by a major brand?  This MTV article, supplied by Kyles Files investigative action team member, Kozi Kyles, sheds some light, but it’s a dim one. 

I do understand that Mountain Dew isn’t exactly the greatest judge of character.  After all, they combed the earth and could only find this giggling gargoyle and Emmett Till-memory defiler to serve as a spokesman.

Then, they went and capped an already idiotic ongoing campaign with this mess.

Yeah, wisely they canned this commercial.  But here’s hoping they stay in deep dew dew for this stupid move.  And word to Odd Future…please, please do not follow Uncle L down the path of wanton, uninformed stupidity.  We really do have to start asking more from these artists because it appears they aren’t asking much of themselves.

I mean, really.  Who called up this shiny body, ashy leg, Ducati-riding kiss-and-tell Wyclef and asked him to re-record “Gone Till November,” but throw some lyrics in there ’bout all the murders going on in Chi-town?

Yep, just what I thought. No. Bawdy.

Honestly, after what Sir Jean did to Haiti (and Lauryn Hill), I’m inclined to tell him thanks, but no thanks for his help.

The city definitely needs a savior, but this guitar-strumming attention-slore ain’t him.

The scheming.  The action.  The ridiculously clever dialogue.  The Lannisters, who always pay their debts.  And this last episode did not disappoint, featuring a  a medieval light saber courtesy of the Lord of Light.

But there is one thing about one of my all-time favorite shows that is making me angrier than Arya on the day of her dad’s execution.

Why in the seven hells are almost all of the Black characters slaves and savages?

Calm down and keep reading.

I know full well that there have been a few GOT characters of colors who weren’t in shackles or channeling Conan the Barbarian. Kudos to the colorblind casting of Xaro Xhoan Daxos and Salladhor Saan.

But generally, there is an unsettling casting practice of non-whites as brutes and enslaved folk that has been consistent from Season 1.

I always thought it odd that the “savages” of the series, aka the Dothraki who figured prominently in Season 1, were mainly a brown and Black coalition of people.  True to stereotypes that have been promoted for centuries now, they fought constantly, had wild orgies in the wide open, feared water and were bitterly mocked and used by the fairest, blondest dude that’s ever set foot in the series aside from White Walkers.  (R.I.P. Viserys.  Pour out a little milk o’ the poppy for Daenerys long-dead brother, y’all.)

Bolstering the theory of this not-so-accidental color coding, consider that before the deluded dictator-in-the-making got his (ahem) golden crown, he was essentially grousing about the white man’s burden as if he were Rudyard Kipling reincarnated. He groused constantly about the “savage” Dothraki and schemed to use their brawn to get his narrow behind on the Iron Throne.

I’ll tell you right now, I was ready to throw in the towel on that alone, but I pressed on.  I am a devout GOTee.

But after seeing this week’s episode, “Kissed By Fire,” I can no longer remain silent, as this show’s popularity skyrockets.  Even if you write off the Dothraki as sun-kissed, not necessarily ethnic individuals, puh-leaze tell me why the slave army known as the Unsullied (those we’ve seen without helmets, anyway) are also brown.  Peep our newest character, Greyworm below.

And once we get to the bottom of that, explain to me why Daenery’s new handmaiden and translator, Missandei, also brown.

I know for a fact that I am not the only one who finds it mind-boggling that in a world of dragons, lords of light, smoke baby demons, and little girls with scales on half their faces, Hollywood can still only see people of color in the slave role.

Sure, I get that Daenerys is in a hotter climate than her winter-fearing would-be subjects, but this is a fantasy series. Surely, the people she’s dealing with could be blue, purple or yellow with maroon stripes and nobody would bat an eye.  And even if the book describes a character in one way, we know damn well the show has strayed from that narrative.  So no more excuses or ignoring the obvious.

Come on, casting agents.  Don’t be accidental racists. You’re ruining an otherwise awesome show.

Tony Starks just officially released “12 Reasons to Die,” a collaboration with composer Adrian Younge that tells the story of a vengeful, murdered man who comes back hard, horrifically even, at the crime family who killed  him and melted his remains into 12 vinyl records as a creepy keepsake.

I’m deeply entranced with the scratchy soul layered under his energetic, urgent flow and this freaky, 70s-esque video.

As I enjoyed being haunted by Ghost, I started reflecting on past hip-hop concept albums that captivated me.

Here’s my list, and feel free to throw your suggestions down there in comments.  I just might be moved to update with the best suggestions.

1.  Prince Paul, Prince Among Thieves

Big Daddy Kane, Kool Keith, Special Ed, RZA and Everlast.  All on one album.  Produced by Prince Paul.  Yes, this ish happened.  And it was awesome.  Woven together by the impressive skills of Breezy Brezlin, this tale of an MC who enters the drug game for that big score that never quite materializes.  If you have not imbibed this audio, do so forthwith.

2.  Ice Cube, Death Certificate

Long before Ice Cube traded in his scowl for family-friendly fame, NWA’s MVP established himself as a prolific lyricist with weighty matters on his mind.  (Hell naw, I ain’t talking about Bop Gun.”)  His second studio album, “Death Certificate” lived up to rap’s sometimes exaggerated assertion of being the CNN of the streets.  Gems including “Bird in the Hand” showed off Oshea Jackson’s wicked wit and fury over the mistreatment of the Black male in America.

3.  Gravediggaz, 6 Feet Deep

RZA’s supergroup went levels deeper than Das EFX’s straight-from-the-sewa origins.  This collective, consisting of  Prince Paul, Frukwan, Too Poetic, and took on otherworldly alter egos (RZArector, Gatekeeper, Grim Reaper, etc.) for this dark, twisted adventure into insanity.  “1-800-Suicide” lyrically taunts a fictional listener mulling his/her own mortality and you can’t shut out the genius of the hysterical “Constant Elevation.” However, the Hannibal Lecter-esque  “Diary of a Madman” is one of my favorite songs of all time.  Think what you will ’bout that.

4.  Outkast, Speakerboxx/The Love Below

I love listening to this Grammy-winning effort despite the nostalgia it invites (when’s the next Outkast album ,btw?).  It stands out as a stellar and truly separate, but equal achievement for the now aesthetically estranged members of Outkast.  Big Boi’s brassier, soulful and slightly more straightforward “Speakerboxx” bounced well off of 3000′s soul-searching journey through heartbreak in “The Love Below.”  My cuts on this one include: “Last Call,” “Hey Ya!,” “The Way You Move,” and “A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre.“  The latter, a lengthy, at times meandering storytelling orgy, is something that must be heard to be believed.  In the words of Arsenio Hall in “Coming to America,” that boy is good!

5.  Nelly, Sweat/Suit

I kid. I kid.

5.  Deltron 3030, Deltron 3030 (Added via @cleettweet)

I’ve been rocking with Del tha Funkee Homosapien since “I Wish My Brother George Was Here,” but what really catapulted this prime lyricist into the upper echelon (pre-Gorillaz) was Deltron 3030, an album set in a future where he must fight an evil borg of freedom suppressing dictators.  In this effort, swelling with off-kilter instrumentals from Dan the Automator, you’ll be immediately swept away by the dead-on, deadpan delivery that makes Del (and his fellow Hieros) great.  If you’re not up on this masterpiece, get thee to Spotify, fire it up in your earbuds, then come back with a full report.

Ushered in by Oprah, the growly voiced, buzz-cut favoring self-help guru is known for her tell it like it “t-i-s” approach and spine cracking hugs.

The former attorney-turned-TV star has a penchant for helping folks recognize the damage they do to themselves and others, most recently through her OWN-TV “Iyanla: Fix My Life” show.

And then there was X.

DMX, one of my personal favorites from the 90s, has — to paraphrase A$ap Rocky and ‘nem– f@@&ing problems.  He has struggled publicly with substance abuse, repeat incarcerations, and an unsavory history with the pitbulls that inspire his trademark lyrical barks and growls.  He has a marginal understanding of technology, and he battles personal demons that have ruined his marriage to the love of his life, in addition to his relationship with local and federal authorities.

He needs help, for sure.

But he was clearly not willing to take it from Iyanla during the season premiere that originally aired on OWN on April 13.

And it seems that for all her insight, the straight-talking star– who was originally supposed to help DMX just with his womanizing ways– did not know that she was about to unleash his inner Damien by delving into his substance abuse.

Now, after what is by all accounts a disastrous FAIL of the “Fix My Life” variety, Vanzant is attempting to get DMX to see the error of his ways (and outburst) with some hashtag on Twitter called #supportDMX.

Um.  Good luck with that.  Here are the six ways she went waaaaaay wrong.

1. I’m a Let You Finish

Iyanla went full Kanye West on DMX within the first few moments of the program, as he attempted to tell her the sad tale of his upbringing, shuttled off to a group home at seven.  Overcome with emotion and wracked with sobs, Dark Man X was fully into his exposition when a seemingly impatient Iyanla broke in and pretty much asked that he exit the woe-is-me spiral.  The look on his hollowed out face was clear that she hurt his feelings deeply and it wasn’t gonna go good from that point on.

2.  Come Clean

DMX has been on that stuff for quite some time.   He owns this and his rap sheet shows this.  You cannot command a person who has struggled with cocaine and crack to instantly also get rid of drinking, weed and even a cigarette– all in one take.  And this ain’t “Intervention.” That airs on A&E, not OWN. I understand that Iyanla’s efforts were to help him see that his thoughts might be clouded by substances, but when it comes to the king o’ pitbulls, pacing is key.

3.    Mother, May I?

I am no psychologist, but then again, neither is Iyanla and that doesn’t stop her.  So, here’s my theory:  I found that in the “Couples Therapy” show, D seemed more receptive to the counselor, though the effort evidently didn’t work.  He and estranged wife Tashera Simmons do not speak, according to what he said on “Fix My Life.”  But I think that Iyanla represented the older Black women in his life, including his mother, who judged him harshly and abandoned him.  He had been looking to get even for some time, it appears, since he called the show host the b-word like she was Katt Stacks, rather than a village elder.

4.  Picture Pages

No, Iyanla did not make a montage of his mugshots and show it to him from behind some raggedy curtain.  No. She. Did. Not.  She best thank Gawd she is still alive because the fire in X’s eyes scared me all the way from TV land.  I damn near hid behind the couch.

5. Family Business

None of us lived in the Simmons household, so we can’t say for certain, but it feels like it was ridiculous for Iyanla to intervene in DMX’s already tumultuous relationship with his son.  Or it may have been the way she intervened.  I liked the way she worked with his son, Xavier, to get him ready to face his father, i.e. pointing out that the rapper is essentially diseased due to substance abuse and didn’t have a father of his own to teach him the ropes.  But I fully disagree with her babysitting the 20-year-old man as he talked to the dad who so clearly misses and loves him.  DMX’s tearful embrace of his oldest son from the onset of their encounter showed he really wanted a relationship, but Iyanla sat there like a social worker on some supervised visitation ish, stage-whispering platitudes for Xavier to parrot.  And foolishly, Xavier repeated what she was saying…even though it was clear that it wasn’t helping matters.  I truly believe that conversation should have been just the two of them, on camera, if need be.  But the mediator-style setup probably sent Earl Simmons over the motherfreaking edge.  And I do think his overgrown pup (an aspiring singer/guitarist) needs to locate his cojones and speak to his father again– this time, sans that damn guitar and camera crew.

6.  Social Media #Support

We all knew the DMX intervention went south from the promos, but I do hope Miss Ma’am knows she didn’t fix anything with that overlong introductory plea to DMX to get his life right and insisting she still has love for him.  Her suggested #supportdmx hashtag came off as a thinly veiled advertisement for the episode.  Gawd knows he didn’t see it.  Her producers should have told her dude doesn’t even understand how Google works. (Check the video below.)  What? Did she think he was doing to DM her an apology?

Instead of going full Easter ham, like Toure justifiably did, I decided to mull this situation in silence.

I really wanted to try and understand how this blazing hot mess came to be.  It took a bit, but to be honest with you, I still can’t figure it out. And now I’m even more confused now that the mocked musical stars have decided to defend their unwise actions.

What in the seven hells (Game of Thrones reference, yes) persuaded Brad Paisley to turn a real (or imagined) incident of him catching flak for rocking the rebel flag into an over-earnest (and uninformed) exploration of race in America?

What prompted the country singer to turn, not to a rapper capable of such nuance, but to LL Cool J…who is best known for licking his juicy lips, coming up with new names for the female anatomy (pink cookies) and, in one case, leaving his “draws” in another man’s hamper…  I mean, I’m not against LL on any day…  I absolutely loved “Mama Said Knock You Out,” “Jingling Baby,” and “Imagine That,” but really, Brad, really?  You couldn’t e-mail, text, Tweet, Facebook message or just put out a public plea for the help of Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Yasiin Bey, hell…Kanye freaking West on Twitter to see if they were free first? Where was Nas for Chrissakes?  Or damn, Black Thought was out of town at the time of taping?

Unless he truly didn’t want his Tea Partier’s lament challenged, the choice just did not and does not make sense.  Even if Brad thought LL could deliver in theory, what then is his excuse once he got a whiff of what James Todd Smith was cooking?  Who, on earth, thought any good could come from this idiotic line from Cool James?

Say what?  So, LL wants us to know that he essentially feels for the slave masters on their desire to get paid, but you just regret that it had to be at the expense of millions of Black lives and the destabilization of an entire culture?  **bats eyes hard**  Say whaaaaat?  Have either of these fools ever turned a single page in a history book or did they just glean all they needed to know about race relations from a midnight screening of “Django Unchained” with a chaser of “Birth of a Nation?”

And not to let Brad slip by like he’s only at fault for finding the worst possible MC on the planet to present the (ahem) Black side of the misunderstandings in post-racial America.  He ought to have a guitar broken over his head by Uncle Pecos for basically personifying the “hapless White man” who can’t help his privilege.

Welp, he didn’t personally enslave anyone so why should he still have to be sorry about it all these years later?  And Gawd forbid he look through history books and figure out why wearing the Confederate flag as a fashion statement might offend folks.  So, if he opted to go get a swastika sweatshirt, folks should forgive him if he says it’s because he’s a fan of Sid Vicious?

And this hogwash about not being able to rewrite history…Oh, for sure.  Believe me, I don’t know too many brown folk waiting on their reparations in addition to their IRS refund, but it might help a bit if …oh…I don’t know… if we in this society could own the privilege we have, work hard to make sure the future yields a level playing field and not consider being cognizant of other people’s struggles to be “walking on eggshells.”  I would not have believed this line if I hadn’t heard it whine right through my headphones via Spotify.

But the worst lines remain the notion of LL Cool J letting “bygones be bygones” as it pertains to racism and saying he will “forget” the iron chains.

I know we’ve all heard this.  Just take a moment to let it sink again.  LL is willing to let it go.  Well. Good. For. Him.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how this made it past teams of audio engineers, agents, publicists, and just human beings with ears.  Nevertheless, no matter how it occurred, I SHALL NOT with LL Cool J and Brad Paisley right now and for the forseeable future.  I think they might be slowly understanding where they went wrong, despite this defiant interview.  But we obviously need to put our foot down hard on this, pop culture clan.  Don’t let this be forgotten, like reggaeton and Milli Vanilli.

Because God forbid….these two clueless clods go somewhere and make a video when the heat dies down.  I swear for Gawd there will be blood if I see a still from that set.

Your turn: What do you think of the “Accidental Racist?”  Is the outrage, which has resulted in it being pulled from YouTube, making it harder for us to discuss race or do you think this opened much-needed dialogue.  (Hell, I’m trying to extract some positive from this situation.)
